My Twilight Princess Theories (私のトワイライト プリンセス 理論)

Hey there.

One Saturday about two or three weeks ago, I beat Twilight Princess and Ocarina of Time within an hour of each other. The resulting awesomeness left me dissatisfied with all of my games. As a result, I haven’t played any video games whatsoever since that day. I’ve had Majora’s Mask for a month or so, but I don’t have a stupid Expansion Pak!

Anyway, all the in-depth playing of Twilight Princess led me to develop two theories. I’ve been rolling them around in my head ever since, but am just now writing them.

The Sacred Grove Is Actually The Areas From The Start of Majora’s Mask

Yeah. In the beginning of Majora’s Mask, we see Link riding through a strange, forest area. It is bare, with lots of tall trees, and clusters of bushes.

MajorasMaskLostWoods1

MajorasMaskLostWoods2This area is actually an extension of the Lost Woods from Ocarina of Time.

Okay. Now, before we get further, it is necessary to know that in every timeline, there is a connection between later Hyrules’ maps, and that of Ocarina of Time.

For example, the map of Hyrule as seen in A Link To The Past is merely that of Ocarina of Time, just rotated some.

Twilight Princess is no exception. There are a few topographical matches, but one of the most common is that of Ordon Village. It is commonly believed that Ordon Village is the successor of, and was built over, Kokiri Forest of Ocarina of Time. Link’s Treehouse directly corresponds to the location where the Hero of Time’s Treehouse was in Ocarina of Time. It is also believed that the Forest Temple of Twilight Princess was built over the remains of the Great Deku Tree, who died in Ocarina of Time. Clearly, there are a lot of connections here. Now, for the main part.

In Twilight Princess, it is necessary to go to a location known as the Sacred Grove. It is accessed from a path across from the path to the Forest Temple. The first time, you must jump across a few giant tree stumps and roots to access the area leading to it, and the second time, you utilise a Golden Cucco (don’t ask).

Now, when you first get to the Sacred Grove, if you look at the bottom of your screen, you’ll notice something odd: the SacredGrove has no minimap. Even Gerudo Desert, which has been completely freaking cut off from the rest of Hyrule within a century, has a minimap. But the Sacred Grove doesn’t. The only reason a place shouldn’t have a minimap would be because it’s uncharted and undocumented, right? In other words, only one other person knows about the place

Anyway, there is no minimap. The Sacred Grove is very similar to the Lost Woods of Ocarina of Time in that it is a forest filled with puzzles and traps. It is also very easy to get lost in (especially since there’s no minimap!), like the Lost Woods. Another similarity between the Lost Woods and the Sacred Grove is that they both hold the distinction of being, in their respective games, the only locations where the character Skull Kid can be found. Add this to the theory that the Skull Kid of Majora’s Mask is the same one from Ocarina of Time, and you have something interesting. Granted, Skull Kid in Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask looks almost completely different from the one in Twilight Princess.SkullKidTwilightPrincessSkullKidOcarinaOfTimeAndMajorasMask

It is most likely that all three Skull Kids are the same, because Skull Kid is known to have a long life. He may even be immortal, but that’s a story for a different time. Besides, you can’t expect anything or anyone to exist for one hundred friggin’ years and not show a lick of change.

Okay, so these are the only two places where Skull Kid can be found, right? Okay. Back to Majora’s Mask. He rides through an extension of the Lost Woods in the beginning of the game, right? Well, in the beginning cutscene, Link is mugged by Skull Kid, who steals Epona and the Ocarina of Time. Naturally, you must recover them. You take control of Link for awhile, and get to do epic parkour stuff. At a point, you will run to an edge, start teetering, and fall off. When you finish falling, you’ll see Skull Kid hanging about in another section of forest. Now, look at these here screenshots. SkullKidTorches1

SkullKidTorches2

Notice here that Skull Kid is flanked by two torches sitting on either side of a cave/hole thing. Quite a few similar places can be found in the Sacred Grove.

SacredGroveTorches1

In the last picture, Skull Kid is in front of the torches, just like he was in Majora’s Mask, only without the floating.

Also, notice how in Majora’s Mask, Link lands on a Deku Flower in a body of water? Well, there is a lot of water in the Sacred Grove, if you know where to look. In fact, most of the water in the Sacred Grove seems to have some kind of lilypad thingy on it.

SacredGroveWater1

SacredGroveWater2

It is quite possible that the Deku Flowers “devolved” into regular lilypads after a century, because the Deku race is all but extinct in Twilight Princess (but somehow appear commonly in the games before and after it).

Remember how I said earlier that Link stumbled and fell into the area with Skull Kid and the torches? Well, here’s a kicker. In Twilight Princess, in the Sacred Grove there is a hidden beta area that is only accessible by cheats. Okay, so in the Sacred Grove, if you use haxx to float up, and you see this.

SacredGroveUnseen1

SacredGroveUnseen3

A plain area with lots of tall trees, eh? Sounds somewhat familiar…

Considering how crazy Twilight Princess’ topography is when compared to that of Ocarina of Time, it seems quite plausible that the area traveled by the Hero of Time in the beginning of Majora’s Mask got flipped around in a hundred years.

A notable connection: the theme that plays in the Lost Woods from Ocarina of Time is Saria’s Song.

The theme that plays in the Sacred Grove is a slowed-down, creepy, somber remix of Saria’s Song.

In Ocarina of Time, you teach a Skull Kid Saria’s Song on the Ocarina in the Lost Woods. In the ending of Majora’s Mask, Skull Kid says this:

SkullKidSariasSongSmell

The song he’s referring to, of course, is Saria’s Song. Considering how brassy the Sacred Grove theme sounds, it is probably Skull Kid playing the theme on his trumpet/flute thingy.

And now, I have a stunning theory. The Catacombs (fan name for the area with the torches) is in the Lost Woods, right? The Catacombs are in Twilight Princess, right? The Catacombs lead to the interior of Clock Tower, right? So the world of Twilight Princess could conceivably lead to Termina, right? So Termina is not as distant as you think, right?……..!!!

Okay, that’s all done with. Next:

City In The Sky Is Actually The Wind Temple From Ocarina Of Time

Remember how I talked about the beta Ice and Wind Temples from Ocarina of Time? If you don’t then you can read here. Anyway, those two Temples ended up being unused, but their concepts did not go completely unused. In the article in the link, I give a few examples of how in the Zelda series, wind and forests go together? Well, this is one of those examples.

The City in the Sky is very wind-themed. First of all, the Gale Boomerang is required to navigate much of the level. Secondly, it is the home of the Oocca, a birdlike race. Birds=Wind. Strong winds blow through various sections, including the entrance. There are very many vents and drafts that Link must take advantage of. Also, the City in the Sky uses various elements from the Forest Temple of Twilight Princess.

Okay, so I’ve done quite enough explaining of how the City in the Sky is wind-themed. But what is its relationship to Ocarina of Time and the Forest Temple/Wind Temple from that game? Well, first of all, we know that the Wind Temple from Ocarina got scrapped, and that many scrapped Ocarina of Time elements turned up in other games. Now, one of the things that connects the two levels is the BGM. Yes, the music. This is the Forest Temple’s theme.

Notice how…ethereal it sounds? Also, notice the weird vocalising and low voices.

Now, this is City in the Sky’s theme.

Again, very ethereal, right? Also, weird vocalising and even creepier voices. Listening to the themes at the same time, they actually don’t conflict each other too much…they actually fit together quite nicely. However, it sure sounds creepy. So we can agree that these two BGMs share aspects in common.

The next thing is that in Ocarina of Time, there weren’t really all that many wind-themed objects or characters. I mean, there was this fan (which was mainly used in the Shadow Temple, for some reason)

ShadowTempleFan

Eew. Anyway, in Ocarina of Time, Link had to withstand the force of these fans by equipping the Iron Boots. In City in the Sky, in order to not get blown away by the various wind sources, Link had to use the Iron Boots. But I digress. Besides that fan, and Farore’s Wind, there were really no wind elements that could be used. However, eight years was plenty of time to develop more wind elements, especially since the system limitations were not as relevant.

I’ve seen a hole in my little theory. If City in the Sky is the lost Wind Temple, than why is it way up in the sky, completely separated from Hyrule? Well, my answer to that is rather cheeky: they never said exactly where the Wind Temple would be! Even though I’m saying it humorously, I’m serious. I ask you, what sense would it make to put a Wind Temple in a forest, when the Water Temple is underwater, and the Fire Temple is in a volcano, and the Forest Temple is in a forest!!?? This means that there was probably an entire area that went unused, that was to surround the Wind Temple.

Well, that’s all the theorising for today. I didn’t mean this post to be so long. But please leave a comment and a like if you like my theories. Bai!

  1. Excellent analysis! I think you are spot on about everything. As for the location of the wind temple I don’t think your theory is that far fetched. It could very well have been a place that link had to teleport to in OOT. I have actually been thinking a lot about playing twilight princess lately. That really was an amazing game. I am actually re playing skyward sword right now and to be honest it is one of my least favorite Zelda games. The way you have to descend from the clouds to each area makes it seem too linear. Also, you mentioned not having an expansion pack to play majoras mask. Have you heard of the collectors edition disc? It is a GameCube promo that allows you to play it on GameCube. Or if you have a Wii, you can download it on the shop channel. But, if you are just seeking some old Nintendo 64 nostalgia I totally understand :).
    Great post!

    1. Thanks for liking and commenting, mate! Twilight Princess is an awesome game-I was lucky to be able to catch such a great deal on it. And yes, I know about the Collector’s Edition, but I already have the cart, and I’m sure the CE would cost more than the Expansion Pack. Thanks for your advice, though. Cheers!
